COVID-19 Testing Q & A

What is COVID-19 testing?

COVID-19 testing determines whether you currently have the virus that causes COVID-19. There are several forms of COVID-19 testing:

Nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs)

NAATs include polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests, the most reliable form of COVID-19 testing. NAATs are lab tests that identify any genetic material from the virus in your body.

Rapid Antigen tests and PCR

Antigen tests use a swab from your nose or throat and offer quick results in 15-30 minutes. They’re less reliable than NAATs, particularly in people who don’t have symptoms.

ID NOW

Stanton Family Clinic uses the Abbott ID NOW COVID-19 testing device, which provides results in 13 minutes or less. ID NOW uses isothermal molecular technology to identify virus DNA (genetic material), offering the benefits of NAATs with the speed of an antigen test.

Why would I need COVID-19 testing?

You might require a COVID-19 test if you develop symptoms of the infection. These symptoms include:

  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

These symptoms are often mild, resembling a common cold. However, they can be severe, causing problems like constant pain or pressure in your chest, the onset of confusion, an inability to stay awake, and blue-colored, pale, or gray skin, lips, and nail beds (depending on your natural skin tone).

Symptoms of severe COVID-19 infection require emergency treatment, so call 911. If you have mild to moderate symptoms, you can visit Stanton Family Clinic for on-site COVID-19 testing.

Do I need COVID-19 testing any other time?

You might need a COVID-19 test even if you don’t have any symptoms. Many people carry the infection without being aware of it because they experience no symptoms, or their symptoms are so mild that they go unnoticed.

Even though the infection isn’t making you sick, it could still prove life-changing or fatal to someone else. Therefore, many places ask for proof that you’re COVID-19-free. Your employer might be one of them. Schools, theaters, and other locations where people gather in large numbers are others.

If you visit somewhere like a care home for older people where you might be in contact with those who are especially vulnerable to severe COVID-19, you might need to prove you’ve had a recent negative test. Traveling abroad is another time when you might need to show a negative test.
